Video Times

Atherton is part of the trailblazing generation of artists in Britain who pioneered video and performance work in the 1970s and 80s. Conceived of as a dual publication, video cassette and booklet. The content of the videotape is the artist watching television. Illuminated by the flickering glow of the TV the artist as TV viewer earnestly peers out of the screen whilst balancing a cup of tea and a chocolate eclair on his lap. The printed booklet, parodying a weekly TV guide, humorously brings the piece full circle by providing a detailed second by second guide to his actions.

Selected by Adam Lockhart at Rewind, a preservation project that is providing a rich resource that addresses the gap in historical knowledge of the evolution of electronic media arts in the UK, enabling further scholarly activity, re-exhibition and research.
